How to Fix a Frozen B&N Nook

How to Fix a Frozen B&N Nook®

So, my Barnes & Noble Nook froze up a couple of days ago. The screensaver was displayed with “Press the power button to wake up your Nook” across the top. But,  it wouldn’t wake up.  Grr!

I found several procedures listed by different people on how to melting ice cubesunfreeze the Nook,  but none of them worked for me,  so I called B&N (800-THE-BOOK) to see if they could help me. The customer service guy was very good to help with my problem. I told him about the procedures I tried,  which didn’t work,  and he told me a new procedure. I decided to document it here in the case that someone else runs into the same problem. This is straight from B&N technical service:

  1. Remove the battery.
  2. Hold the power button for 45-50 seconds.
  3. Leave the Nook as it is for 15-20 minutes.
  4. Replace the battery.
  5. Using your A/C converter,  plug your USB cord into the wall socket (not your computer) and into your Nook.
  6. Let it charge for 3-5 hours.
  7. Unplug it from the wall and push the power button.
I created a brief video of this process on YouTube:

That should do it.  If it doesn’t fix the frozen issue,  then B&N told me they would replace the Nook.
I hope this helps you.

  1. Our Nook was dropped and froze on the screen it was currently on. The yellow LED light would not illumnate. I tried various fix it instructions on various forums, including B&N forums, to no avail. Tried removing the battery and plugging the nook in to go through the booting process. Nothing. Tried various reset and rebooting instructions on various forums to no avail.

Here is what I did to restart the booting process which is a technique not mentioned on ANY forum. 1). Plug the nook in without the battery inserted 2.) Keep the power button pushed down continously 3.) As you keep the power button pressed, insert and remove the battery repeatedly for a few seconds at a time. After several removals and insertions of the battery, the nook rebooted and unfroze.

After every single fix it tip failed and I was about to purchase a new nook, the procedure above began the rebooting process, and it works like a charm now.

    1. My nook froze and I am still looking for the process to unfreeze my nook. How do you unfreeze a nook with a fine battery!? The battery charges and a different battery doesn’t make a difference! I’m anxious for my nook to unfreeze. Nothing works! I’ve tried every battery removal trick.

      1. Hi. The battery removal is not because of a bad battery in this case. It is removed as part of the process of fixing the nook when it’s frozen. Remove the battery and follow the rest of the instructions and see if it helps. If not, then call B&N and see if they can help. Good luck!!

        1. Okay. So I’ve been trying to turn on my nook for about the last few weeks or so. And I’ve tried taking off the back and getting to the battery. But I can’t seem to be able to open it. I don’t know if it’s because it’s a nook simple touch or what. Any suggestions?

    2. !!!YAY!!! IT WORKED!!! ok I tried everything and this worked I’m happily amazed, and relieved
      Thank you Roderick Moore

  2. I rooted my nook and when I put the sd card in and powerd it on, it had the rooted forever screen on and just froze. what do I do? By the way I have a nook simple touch

  3. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I was on vacation and my Nook “died.” Well, at least it froze. I was heart broken mainly because it was a gift from my son. I found this page and tried it. Voila, it is back from the dead! Many thanks, again!

  4. I was hesitant to remove the battery when my Nook froze up yesterday because it’s hard to get the back off. However, by noon today battery was dead and that solved the problem. I was able to charge it up and use it again.
